Summary
"Rhymes, riddles and stories have been used to pass on the history, beliefs and customs of society from generation to generation. Children learned their lessons at the feet of their elders. Rhymes and stories were the content of those lessons conveying, amongst other concepts, mathematical ideas and understandings. We believe that they still have an important role to play in the learning process and, in particular, in the process of learning mathematics. The book is a collection of traditional and modern rhymes, riddles and stoiries with mathematical themes. They can be used to provide a welcome break from more formal activities or they can form the introduction or conclusion of a math lesson. They also provide a source of enjoyment as the children rap, dramatise or vocalise them. This book is a starting point for using rhymes, riddles and stories in the math lesson. Rather than give activities or suggestions for each rhyme, we have provided an outline of what happended when we used one particular rhyme. Other similar rhymes then follow so that you and your children can bring your own stamp of individuality and creativity on them." -- introduction page
