Summary
"Much of history is recorded in the epitaphs of nations that have perished because of their internal weaknesses and schisms. For when a people become more preoccupied with narrow self-interest and family quarrels that with their national good, they fall easy prey to the enemy outside their gates or crumble under the stresses and strains within. For a time it appeared that the young American Republic would also be numbered among the states that had not been able to surmount their fatal divisive tendencies. As author Francis Russell brings his account on the following pages to a close, seven Southern states have seceded and others are about to take the same disastorous step, a man chosen by only a minority of the voters is on his way to be sworn in as President, and a beleaguered Army garrison in Fort Sumter is preparing to resist an expected attack. If this book had been published at that time, its editors would probably not have been thought unduly pressimistic if they had entitled it The Death of a Nation. Yet the republic survived and survives today..." book introduction
