- Harriet Beecher Stowe drew a lot of controversy and outright contempt for her 1852 novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. In this print, the artist has depicted a nightmarish scene, reminiscent of a Bosch painting, with an army of monsters and demons doing battle in a wasted landscape. A black man holds a flag which reads "Women of England to the Rescue." Copies of Uncle Tom's Cabin are being fed to a fire, and Beecher Stowe herself is shown near the mouth of a cave titled "Underground Railroad," where she is holding a book that declares "Uncle Tom's Cabin, I Love Blacks" while being attacked by demons
